The One Word Project for Kids Book
To kick things off, start by reading the One Word for Kids book by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton, and Jim Page.
It’s such a fun and inspiring story that’ll get your students excited about choosing their one word for the year.
Don’t have the book? There is also a video reading of the book here! BONUS! It’s read by one of the authors of the book. 👏
After reading, have a little chat with the class about what the whole “one word” thing means and why it’s so powerful.
If your students are struggling a bit, here’s a link to a video of 5th graders sharing their “one word” and the reason behind it!
Once they get it, they’ll be ready to jump into a brainstorming session!
Brainstorming Their One Word for the Year
After reading, it is time to start thinking of their own “one word” to help focus the year.
This resource includes a suggested one word list you can project to get your students thinking!
Once they’ve chosen their word, they can use the brainstorming sheets to really dive deep into how they can focus their year using this word.
This brainstorming page helps students reflect on what they want to focus on during the year. Whether it’s becoming braver, kinder, or more creative, the brainstorming sheet gives students a chance to explore different possibilities and think about how their one word will shape their actions.
This part of the project allows them to reflect on their personal goals. Bonus: it gets them writing more in a way that’s meaningful and authentic to them!
Writing About The One Word Goal Setting
Now it’s to turn that brainstorm into a writing.
The One Word Project for Kids Goal Setting Resource and Friendship bracelet activity includes writing pages where students can write about their chosen word.
Students use their brainstorming sheet to create a paragraph that includes why they picked that word, how it connects to their goals, and how they plan to use it in their everyday lives.

One Word Friendship Bracelet Craft
Once they’ve finished their writing, it’s time to turn their word and writing into a creative project- a friendship bracelet craft!
To complete, print out the alphabet and decorative beads pages.
Then, students cut out the letter beads and glue them on to spell their word. They can decorate their bracelet string by adding colored bead pieces.

The craft helps reinforce the importance of their chosen word and adds a personal touch that your students will be excited about!
