Well, we’ve just missed one hurricane and have another barrelling our way… MUST BE OCTOBER in Florida! All jokes aside, I hope everyone here in Florida with me is safe during this uncertain time. But since we’re knee-deep in October, I thought I’d share a fun and EASY Halloween math game using those cute pumpkin eggs you can find right now at Target! Materials for Pumpkin Eggs Math Game

To get this game set up is pretty easy. All you need are the following items:

So, I found these pumpkin eggs in the Halloween Party section at Target last year. I don’t think I ever grabbed something up so fast! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿƒโ€โžก๏ธ

Can’t find them at your local store? You can check them out online here!

The pumpkin candy bucket I had from a few years ago, but you can find new ones here online, as well!

The last piece of this fun and easy math activity is the question cards and recording sheet. I already whipped one up to make it easy for you. It’s a free download as part of the Applicious Resource Library.

Setting Up the Pumpkin Egg Math Game

To set up, I first numbered each egg from one through 12 using a black Sharpie marker.

Then, I cut apart the math questions. If you download the freebie from the Applicious Resource Library, you’ll see there are two options: addition and subtraction.

Or, you can make up your own questions and number them one through 12.

Next, stuff the eggs with the corresponding questions. Finally, place all the filled eggs in the bucket with the recording sheet.

Now, the game is ready to be played!

Playing the Pumpkin Egg Math Game

Playing this game is super easy and fun!

To play:

First, students pull an egg out of the bucket. Then, they open the egg and solve the equation. They record the equation and the answer on the recording sheet.

Students play until all the eggs have been answered.

Ain’t that easy?!

Other Ways to Use the Pumpkin Eggs in Your Classroom

Don’t need another math center idea? Try these ideas instead!

  • Letter Match-Up: Put the capital letter in one egg and the lowercase letter in another. Students work to match the upper- and lowercase letters. Just make sure you get enough eggs!
  • Sentence scrambles: Write sentences, then cut them up. Place the sentences in the eggs, then have students unscramble and write the sentences. Pro teacher tip: Print the sentences on different-colored paper so the words don’t accidentally get put back in the wrong egg.
  • Pumpkin Egg Hunt: Think Easter Egg hunt, but with a pumpkin twist! Fill the eggs with review questions, then hide them around the classroom. Give students 3 minutes to find 2-3 eggs. Then, answer the questions on notebook paper. Have them turn in correct answers for a few pieces of bite-size candy.
  • Vocabulary and Definition Match-Up– To play, put a vocabulary word in one egg and the definition in another. Students work to match the words and definitions.
  • Review Questions– Write review questions on strips of paper and stuff the eggs (perfect for Social Studies!) Then, students open the eggs and answer questions. More fun then a review sheet!
